  • Relocation Assistance (based on eligibility) The Duke Cancer Center Clinic 2-2 Oncology Nurse is a professional RN with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Using the nursing process, the clinic nurse provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum for patients of Breast Medical Oncology, Breast Surgical Oncology, Gynecological Medical/Surgical Oncology, Endocrine Medical/Surgical Oncology, and Head & Neck Oncology.The 2-2 RN is a key member of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes providers, residents, fellows and other clinical support staff. This professional provides clinical support to patients and caregivers, such as comprehensive assessment, general and focused education, and decision-making support. The 2-2 RN has the skills and knowledge to coordinate quality, patient-centered care through effective communication with the interprofessional cancer care team.In alignment with the position statement published by ONS, the 2-2 RN role encompasses the following:
  • Coordination services facilitate care transitions through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care.---
  • The RN should practice in accordance with the ONS Oncology Nurse Navigator Core Competencies as applicable to their practice. The core competencies of include coordination of care, communication, education, and professional role.
  • The nurse in an Oncology RN role should possess comprehensive oncology expertise, as evidenced by certification through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation or other oncology nursing certification accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or within 2 years of hire.
  • RN's advocate for adherence to evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and pathways and participates in the collection and analysis of patient outcome data to optimize patient and organizational outcomes.
  • The workload of the 2-2 RN will be based upon data from reliable and valid metrics, including health system standards and measures sensitive to the contribution to the navigation process.Duties will include:
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team including: nurse triage, schedulers, and other support services
  • Facilitate obtaining additional records, slides, scans needed for new patient evaluations and return patients if not in Care Everywhere
  • Route return appt requests in clinic to front desk as directed by MD/APP
  • Check through clinic visits and ensure all patients have appropriate orders
  • Coordinate outside labs/scans with other providers
  • Obtaining all materials needed for new patients such as: outside lab/scan results and pathology for review, as needed (office staff can call and get but may need nurse to track)
  • Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled appropriately as requested
  • Medication teaching, symptom management teaching, and/or surgical teaching when indicated
  • Coordinate chemotherapy schedules
  • Chemotherapy teaching and calendars in partnership with clinic pharmacists
  • Triage of patients (calling patients back for issues that don't need direct APP/MD response)
  • Assist with medication refills requests
  • Calling patients with negative or normal test results as directed by the APP/MD
  • Assisting with disease specific procedures and therapies
  • Other tasks as assigned by Nurse Manager or delegated tasks by the APP/MD within the nursing scope Qualifications:
  • Education: BSN or ADN - If Associates Degree in Nursing, must be enrolled in a bachelor's program within 2 years of hire and completed within 5 years of hire.
  • 1 year of Oncology experience preferred
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferredJob Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. At a manager's discretion, employees with 6 months of experience who are exceptional performers may be eligible for this level.
  • Obtain an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) within 2 years of hireRegistrations, Certifications, and/or Licenses:
  • Must have unencumbered current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. If compact license, must obtain NC license within 90 days.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
