Bulletin.Summary Are you interested in aging advocacy work? Are you
currently a student working on a degree in areas of study such as
political science, communications, public administration or
gerontology? The AARP North Carolina Office in Raleigh is looking
for an intern to assist its busy office with advocacy-related work,
communications, and volunteer management. This paid internship and
will begin in early January, 2021, is located in Raleigh, North
Carolina; and will require a 15-25 hour per week commitment. The
internship will conclude in mid-December 2021. Responsibilities The
primary focus will be supporting our continued work to protect
nursing home residents, push for programs to help people save for
retirement, and improve access to affordable, quality health care,
including an effort to reduce skyrocketing prescription drug
prices. Responsibilities will include work such as: * Support our
advocacy and outreach with increased promotion and communications *
Monitor the news environment for issues, reporters and
opportunities that can help advance AARP strategic communications
priorities. * Assist with drafting press releases, event
advisories, editorials and other copy for internal and external
channels. * Pitch stories and statements to local media to support
outreach (events) and advocacy * Assist in the planning and
production and editing of videos and podcasts. * Assist in the
planning and executing of community outreach events; * Support the
production and dissemination of correspondence with volunteers,
members, activists and the legislature * Work directly with
volunteers and staff to represent AARP at local events, including
forums, news conferences and rallies spotlighting AARP issues; *
Conduct online searches in support of legislative issues * Deliver
educational and advocacy materials to legislative and/or campaign
offices; * Research candidates, elected state officials, their
positions and their affiliations; Requirements Prospective intern
must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited
college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate
juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post doctorate students.
AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to
re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those
who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a
continuing education program. Additional requirements include: *
Good organizational and communications skills (both over the phone
and in writing) * You must be able to interact and engage members
of the public. * Leadership qualities * Team player * Enthusiastic
* You must have experience with basic research projects, gathering
information, culling and capturing pertinent details with limited
guidance. * A commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP. *
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook *
Interest in issues/policy relating to aging, health care,
utilities, and/or financial security * Interest or experience with
the state legislative process is a plus, but not a requirement
